Why The Country Needs Jason Chaffetz in The Senate

So you have seen the previous two posts (reasons for Sen. Hatch and State Sen. Liljenquist ) on reasons to vote FOR these two candidates.  I saved the reasons for Rep. Chaffetz for last largely because I know I am biased on this particular subject. I seriously could go on for days about why Jason Chaffetz is the best thing to hit DC since it became the US Capital!

Rep. Chaffetz is my representative (at least until redistricting moves me into the new 4th Congressional District Cry) and I moved here specifically to be in his district so that I could work on his first campaign.  I learned about him and became a firm believer in him while I was still in Minnesota.  I do have a couple of reasons (selfish I admit) for not wanting Jason to run for Senate (Jason - if you are listening....).  I truly think that Jason's feisty, fiery personality are a better fit for the House of Representatives.  We need him in the Oversight Committee tacking the TSA and their excesses.  Plus having his eagle eye over DC......but.....

That said - here are some reasons why Jason Chaffetz would be a great asset in the US Senate.  Jason is principled and will not sell out his principles for "political expedience".  That is by far the biggest complaint American voters have about the Senate as a whole.  Jason would NEVER stand silently by while the Majority party twiddled their thumbs for 800+ days without doing their Constitutional duty of passing a freaking budget!

The press likes Jason, which in and of itself is not always a great thing but in this case...  Jason can get on just about any network at any time and be his usual down to earth self while at the same time making a very compelling case for conservatism.  He is, without a doubt, one of the best spokespeople that conservatism has in Washington DC.  Jason has been effective in the House at building quiet bi-partisan support for common sense legislation.  For crying out loud he has co-sponsored legislation with Anthony Weiner - one of the most progressive members of the House - to do away with mohair subsidies.  Talk about a no brainer!

Rep. Chaffetz detractors love to try to paint him as an extremist nut-job but when you take a look at what he has accomplished in 4 short years you can see that is simply not the case.  He has worked with the Democrats on common sense issues (like getting rid of mohair subsides) and on issues where the government is intruding in your lives and on one issue that left many on the right scratching their heads in confusion.  However, the one thing that ties all these issues together is principle - something that his detractors just do not get.

Oh and Rep. Chaffetz was Tea Party before there was any such thing!  Jason Chaffetz showed a new generation of politician just how to prevail against a well funded incumbent.  His victory was the inspiration that many of last years GOP freshman class needed to get off of the couch and into the arena.

Probably one of the best reasons for Jason Chaffetz to make the step up from Representative to Senator would be the fact that he would shake that august institution to it's very foundation - and that is not entirely a bad thing at all.
